The Vulcan Trail Association is a non-profit group representing outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy non-motorized activities.
We are located in, around, and out of the Birmingham area.
NOTE: If our web site isn't up to date, please bear with us, it just means we're out hiking, biking, canoeing, orienteering......get the idea.......
Various trip leaders plan many trips during the year and there is always room for the impromptu weekend getaway.
All skill and endurance levels are recognized - from the 7-day expeditions in the Rockies to the weekend family trips in the Smokies.
Monthly meetings are held at pm at the Hoover Library on the third Wednesday of every month except December and July. Instead we will gather for our Holiday Party on December 13th.
Members will receive detailed information via the Yahoo Group.
If you are a dues paying member and not on the Yahoo Group, please let bamaanne@know.
While the main purpose of the group is to promote hiking and backpacking in Alabama and surroundings areas, the group is actively involved in rafting, canoeing, biking, Oak Mountain search and rescue support, and environmental issues.
We maintain a section of the Pinhoti from Adamʼs Gap to Chandlerʼs Gap and participate in Ruffner Mountain and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve activities. Founding members include Vivian and Tom Lamb, Les Miller, Steve Spencer and (at that time, Cathy Spencer); James and Mary Ann Jenkins.
Over the years the club has sponsored many activities such as backpacking and canoe camping classes through UABʼs Special Studies, Second Sunday Hikes at Oak Mountain, National Trails Day events, and regular participation in Oak Mountain rescue practices.
Members of the VTA were and are instrumental in the early and current activities of the Vulcan Orienteering Club and Ruffner Mountain, an urban preserve located in downtown Birmingham.
